Where your 3PL is based changes your cost structure, not just your postcode

25 September 2026

UK logistics capacity is heavily clustered by region and that geography shapes carrier density, labour costs and delivery reach in ways that matter operationally.

Most shippers pick a provider and treat location as a secondary detail. It is not. The region a warehouse or 3PL operates from directly affects which carriers call daily, how tight the labour market is and how quickly a parcel reaches a given postcode zone.

The patterns are well-established. Manchester and the wider North West host some of the UK's largest shed footprints, with strong carrier frequency and road access across the M60 and M62 corridors. Bristol and the South West attract e-commerce specialists partly because of proximity to ports and a relatively accessible last-mile reach into southern England. Glasgow-based operators increasingly differentiate on sustainability credentials, relevant for shippers with Scope 3 commitments and Scottish distribution requirements.

None of those regional strengths are universal. A Manchester facility that excels on pallet volume may not serve a brand shipping to rural Wales or Cornwall as efficiently as a smaller Midlands site. Cross-border access to Ireland or Northern Ireland adds another layer where port proximity and customs-ready infrastructure become concrete operational variables, not marketing copy.

The practical test is to match the geography of your volume, your customers and your carrier preferences before shortlisting a provider. SupplySift's breakdown of UK logistics companies by region is a useful starting reference for that exercise.
