The Impact of Web 3.0 on Logistics Services

31 January 2023

Value Chain Lab has received an Innovate UK grant to industrialise its Web3.0 logistics platform. The technology offers potential improvements to supply chain transparency and operational efficiency significantly.

Blockchain and distributed ledger technology have generated significant interest in logistics due to their transparency and audit capabilities. Value Chain Lab recently received an Innovate UK grant to develop and scale its Web3.0 platform for logistics applications. The grant recognises the potential for blockchain to address real supply chain challenges: tracking goods through complex networks, verifying authenticity, and enabling faster payment processing. Web3.0 approaches enable direct peer-to-peer transactions without intermediaries, potentially reducing transaction costs. Smart contracts can automate payments when conditions are met, improving cash flow for smaller participants. Distributed records create permanent, auditable trails that benefit compliance and dispute resolution. However, blockchain also carries real limitations that cannot be ignored. Public blockchains are slow and energy-intensive. Privacy concerns in transparent ledgers conflict with competitive confidentiality needs. Integration with existing systems remains challenging. The Innovate UK investment signals that the government sees commercial potential in the technology. Results from Value Chain Lab's industrialisation work will provide practical evidence about viability in real-world supply chains.
