NX Group's Metro deal shows logistics consolidation is still moving fast

23 April 2026

NX Group's acquisition of Metro Supply Chain shows how logistics consolidation is reshaping shipper choice, provider scale and the role of agile mid-sized operators.

NX Group's acquisition of Metro SC is another sign that logistics consolidation is moving beyond local market reshuffling and into larger cross-border plays. The deal values Metro at CAD 1.8 billion, with a possible earnout of up to CAD 400 million. For NX, it brings a stronger footprint across Canada, the US and the UK, adding depth in contract logistics, distribution and end-to-end supply chain services. For shippers, the signal is more mixed. Larger logistics groups can offer broader coverage, stronger systems and deeper capital backing. They can also reduce choice in sectors where consolidation is moving fastest. Once more capacity sits inside fewer networks, buyers may find it harder to compare service models, pricing structures and regional alternatives. This does not mean smaller and mid-sized providers are being pushed out of the market. In fact, consolidation can create openings. As larger groups focus on integration, network rationalisation and global account growth, more agile operators can win work by solving specific customer problems, offering specialist capacity and responding faster to local needs. The harder economic environment will pull the market in both directions. More deals are likely as stronger groups buy scale or capability. At the same time, cost pressure, low margins and weak demand will continue to drive insolvencies among vulnerable operators. Shippers still benefit from greater optionality, but "abundance of choice" can also create problems for some. Overall, the market is consolidating and flexible multi-provider access will matter more as that happens.
