Warehouse Manager Challenges and How To Overcome Them

30 May 2023

Warehouse managers face persistent challenges managing labour, inventory accuracy, and space efficiency effectively. Targeted strategies and technology adoption help address these obstacles and improve operational performance significantly.

Warehouse managers deal with daily pressures that traditional systems cannot easily solve. Labour challenges top most lists: seasonal demand spikes require rapid hiring and training constantly. Turnover costs money and knowledge. Inventory accuracy suffers when pickers lack clear instructions or systems lack visibility. Space often feels constrained even when utilisation is poor, suggesting organisation problems rather than absolute shortage. Technology helps tackle some issues effectively. Barcode systems with mobile devices enable faster, more accurate picking. Warehouse management software provides visibility and optimisation recommendations automatically. Labour planning tools help predict demand and schedule appropriately. However, technology alone is insufficient for real improvement. Process discipline matters: systematic cycle counts, clear labelling, regular training. Communication between warehouse and commercial teams improves operations significantly. When sales understands warehouse constraints, they can adjust timing or batch orders differently. When warehouse understands customer commitments, they prioritise accordingly. Many operational improvements cost little but require consistent attention. Measure current performance across key metrics: error rates, productivity per labour hour, space utilisation. Target the worst-performing area first for maximum impact.
