Guide to Supply Chain Management Jargon (Part 1)

7 March 2023

Supply chain and logistics terminology can baffle newcomers and experienced professionals alike. Understanding common jargon clarifies communication and helps evaluate solutions more effectively and confidently.

Logistics professionals use specialised language that sounds alien to those outside the industry. Understanding this terminology helps you speak confidently with service providers, read contracts accurately, and avoid costly misunderstandings. Common terms appear across different contexts, sometimes with slightly different meanings. For example, a warehouse stores goods long-term whilst a distribution centre prioritises rapid throughput. An order fulfillment operation combines both functions. Load refers to the goods shipped, but also describes how fully a vehicle is utilised. Consolidation means combining multiple shipments to reduce transport cost. Less-than-truckload, or LTL, describes partial loads that share truck space with other shipments. Full-truckload, or FTL, means one shipper fills the entire vehicle completely. These distinctions matter because they affect pricing and timelines significantly. Pickup refers to collecting goods from a supplier, whilst delivery means dropping at a customer. Demurrage charges apply when a shipper delays loading or unloading a vehicle, tying up driver time. Understanding these distinctions lets you negotiate better contracts and predict true operational costs accurately.
