Cambridge University and VCL Establish Proof-of-Concept for Collaborative Shipping

6 June 2022

Cambridge University and Value Chain Lab have established a proof-of-concept demonstrating collaborative shipping benefits. This research validates the economic and environmental potential of cooperation effectively.

Value Chain Lab initiated a collaborative study with Cambridge University examining the practical benefits of shared shipping networks. The proof-of-concept project tested whether competing carriers could coordinate shipments, consolidate capacity, and reduce overall system costs effectively. Results validated the theoretical benefits comprehensively. By consolidating multiple shipments from different senders into single vehicles, the network reduced empty miles and improved vehicle utilisation significantly. Cost savings to participants ranged from 15 to 22 percent whilst simultaneously reducing carbon emissions by similar proportions. The study identified real implementation challenges: confidentiality concerns, different IT systems, and coordination complexity. However, participants reported these obstacles were manageable with proper governance and neutral intermediary support. The research suggests that collaborative networks represent a genuine path to more efficient logistics. Regulatory interest in emissions reduction could accelerate adoption as companies seek mechanisms to meet environmental targets. The findings support the case for platforms that enable carriers to coordinate without merging operations or sharing confidential information directly. Further studies will expand the research.
